100% digital mammography
The Centers feature 100% digital mammography. It is the latest technology in breast imaging. Radiologists can manipulate the mammography image to get the best view-enlarge, lighten, or darken it-which reduces the need to call patients back for additional views.

computer-aided detection
Digital mammography allows the staff to also perform computer-aided detection of breast abnormalities. This technology provides another degree of added confidence because the equipment's software performs its own read, looking for subtle abnormalities such as calcifications.

expertise
Every mammogram is interpreted by board certified radiologists, many of whom are fellows of the American College of Radiology. The technologists who perform mammography procedures at the Centers practice breast imaging exclusively and are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Specially certified ultrasonographers work with radiologists to conduct breast ultrasounds. The breast ultrasound is a painless procedure that produces a computer image of the breast tissue. It is used by radiologists to distinguish whether a lump is fluid-filled or solid.

education
In addition to knowledge offered by Emerson's staff, patients can learn more in the Breast Health Center's education library, which has reading materials, breast models and portable DVD players. Patients can have a seat and read or watch a DVD, or they can choose to take educational materials home with them.

essentials
The American Cancer Society recommends a base line mammogram at age 40. After age 40, women should have a mammogram every year. Some women are at a greater risk and may require earlier or more frequent imaging.
Some cancers are not visible on mammograms. For this reason, monthly breast-examination and an annual breast exam by a physician are also important components in detecting breast cancer early.
A physician referral is not required to schedule an appointment. Mammography is covered under most insurance plans. Contact your insurance company for more information about your individual coverage.
